Nonclinical and Clinical Services

Nonclinical Studies

The Toxicological Science Division serves to perform nonclinical studies by taking full advantages of a vast array of techniques and renowned reliability that the former Mitsubishi Chemical Safety Institute Ltd. (MSI) had acquired through its broad range of accumulated experience.

Tests on Chemical Substances

Tests and Studies to Meet the Requirements of the Industrial Safety and Hygiene Law

As specified by the Industrial Safety and Hygiene Law (ISHL, 1979), it is obligatory to make a hazard assessment of chemical substances and to report their carcinogenicity, prior to manufacture or importation, in order to prevent occupational diseases, especially cancer.
Primarily, bacterial mutation tests (Ames tests) are performed. When the results are suspected to be positive, chromosome aberration tests in cultured mammalian cells are conducted.
The Kashima Laboratory has extensive experience in conducting the above studies in compliance with the ISHL GLP. Please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your specific needs.

Bacterial Mutation Tests (Ames Tests)

This is the most commonly used mutagenicity screening method in the world. We generally use a total of 5 strains (4 strains of Salmonella typhimurium, 1 strain of Escherichia coli) to qualitatively determine mutagenicity. We also perform studies required for notification of new chemical substances in the EU.

Chromosomal Aberration Tests in Cultured Mammalian Cells

Usually, it is performed when the results are positive and the specific activity is 1000 or higher in the Ames test. We evaluate the clastogenicity of chemical substances and its levels (if present) in CHL/IU cells or human lymphocytes. We also perform studies required for notification of new chemical substances in the EU.

All of our research and studies are in strict adherence to the laws concerning protection and management of animals with full respect of the standards concerning care and management of test animals, and have been accepted and certified for animal welfare practices.
